Commercial Coffee Grinders
Commercial coffee grinders are the secret to perfect flavour in every cup. A professional coffee grinder machine will get the best out of every bean, with settings you can adjust to suit each variety of coffee you serve.
A commercial espresso grinder from Mulmar offers reliable quality, with models suitable for businesses of all sizes, from cafes looking to serve barista-standard drinks, through to busy coffee shops with a need for consistently ground beans.
How do commercial coffee grinders work?
A commercial coffee grinding machine takes whole beans and grinds them ready to be brewed into a fresh cup of delicious coffee or espresso.
There are several different types of industrial coffee grinder, including:
On-demand coffee grinders
These grind and dispense coffee beans directly into a portafilter basket, giving the freshest cup of coffee if brewed immediately.
However, an on-demand coffee grinder requires precision, and the group handle must be aligned perfectly to avoid any spillage.
Doser coffee grinders
Doser coffee grinders output the ground beans into a container, and the barista then dispenses one dose at a time into the group handle ready for brewing.
This can be beneficial for busy coffee shops, as beans can be ground in advance of peak periods and then used as orders are placed.
Doser grinders include:
- Automatic grinders begin grinding automatically after every 12 doses and stop when the doser is full.
- Manual grinders include an on/off switch which grinds the beans until switched off by the barista.
- Timed grinders feature a timer switch that grinds the beans for a set number of seconds then stop, similar to an egg timer.
These different types of industrial coffee grinder machine give businesses an excellent choice of grinder to suit their expertise, level of demand and the freshness of coffee required.
How to use a commercial coffee grinder?
A professional coffee grinder uses a blade or burr to grind whole roasted coffee beans into the coffee grounds that are then brewed into espresso and other coffee drinks.
The best commercial coffee grinder for your business depends on your level of expertise. Some grinders are easier to operate, if you don’t have professional barista training.
In general, to use a grinder, you must add whole beans into the top of the machine, adjust the coarseness of grind that is desired, and ensure that the appropriate container is placed below the machine’s output.
A commercial coffee machine with grinder can also brew the finished drink; however, standalone coffee bean grinders can also be used to pre-grind the beans ready to be used in a commercial espresso machine.

How to adjust a coffee grinder
Adjusting the coarseness of a coffee grinder depends on the type of grinder you have purchased:
- Stepped grinders have several predefined levels from coarse to fine, with a lever or knob to select between them.
- Stepless grinders have a control (e.g. a knob) which can be turned to any position, giving the barista total control over the coarseness of the coffee grounds.
In either case, adjusting the grinder is easy using the labelled controls; however, a stepless grinder may be better suited to a trained barista due to the finer level of control it offers.
How much are coffee grinders?
It’s normal to see a commercial coffee grinder for sale at prices ranging from around £700 for a smaller or simpler unit for small businesses, through to £4,000 for a top-of-the-range barista-quality coffee grinder.
